Cooking Clubs for Children in Bristol

After School, Saturday & Holiday Clubs

We offer fun, hands-on cooking classes that will maximise independence in the kitchen.

Your children will discover the enjoyment of cooking and gain an understanding about healthy food and nutrition. They will learn to cook with seasonal ingredients, while learning to create nutritious and delicious meals in a safe manner. We will provide them with kitchen guidelines (eg. disposal of waste, handling knives, separate boards for preparing raw meat, etc.).

We aim to cook together ensuring safety in the kitchen and awareness of possible dangers. Cooks will be given a copy of the recipes to be cooked on the day. They will be let loose to work as independently as possible, or in small groups, preparing the recipes with the minimal risk of injury. They will take the recipes with them at the end of the session and will be able to refer to those at home and create the recipes on their own. Emphasis is placed on the proper handling of food and safe use of tools and appliances.

Children each prepare their own dinner or lunch and eat it together at the end of the session.

The after school club runs half-termly in conjunction with school’s term times. A weekly session is from 4.00 pm to 6.15 pm for 6 weeks. These must be booked and paid in advance as a block. There is a maximum of 6 children per group and a minimum of 3 children. The Cost per session is £23. Where two members of the same family attend the cost is reduced to £20 per child. Currently the two groups are Mondays (8-11 year olds) and Thursdays (5 to 7 years old).

Each session is themed with a different cuisine from around the world. Incredible recipes will include well-balanced meals and snacks that are selected to appeal to all tastes. Recipes include some single portion meals as well as special occasion foods for family meals and entertaining.

We will have dinner together with the dishes that they have cooked on the day. Cooks will be encouraged to read the recipe (or to have it read for them if they are young) and gather ingredients, which teach proper kitchen organisation for refrigerated foods, dry goods, frozen foods & utensil storage. Routines are created for clean-up and safe handling of food.

Safety instructions and practice allows cooks (if there is an indication of confidence and physical ability) to learn to boil, sauté, steam, simmer and bake. They are taught simple adaptations and routines to lower the risk of injury as they work with hot pots and dishes.

Careful measurement techniques are taught as a means to reproduce a recipe. Cooks learn to slice, dice and chop using a vast variety of tools including pizza cutters, chef safety knives, scissors and plastic knives. As the courses progress, they use peelers, juicers, safety graters and corers. Proper tools are utilised for zesting, juicing, mashing, whisking and blending.

Current nutrition information and the Food Pyramid are discussed. Healthy decision-making is reinforced with label reading, portion control and low-fat substitutes.

Positive behaviour interaction is encouraged while cooking and socialising. The table is set properly, food presented attractively and we taste after each session while practicing good manners. Portion control, plating, family-style, buffet and garnishing are taught.

Holiday Clubs

During the school holidays we run 2, 3 or 4 day cookery classes. Generally they are from 10.30 am to 2.00pm or from 2.30pm to 6.00pm and the cost is £38 per child. They have to be booked and paid in advance. Children can attend 1, 2,3 or all the dates, if they are booked on more that one day, a 10% discount will be given on the total bill.

The lessons can be booked for 1, 2, 3 or every day on offer every holiday. Generally they run on consecutive days.

We will have themed days and generally the children will prepare their own lunch (it won’t be sandwiches) and sometimes there will be the possibility of parents tasting what the children have prepared on these sessions or to take home some goodies.

The classes are small with a minimum of 3 and maximum of 6 children per class. Children will be split into separate groups depending on their age.
We can provide extended childcare for £4.50 per hour, where children will play games or do some art.
